Hello everyone, my name is Renske Zuurveen.
- 00:02 - 00:06
I want to tell you something about creating a new habit.
- 00:07 - 00:09
When you want to create a new habit
- 00:09 - 00:14
First think about what went wrong the last time you wanted to create a new habit.
- 00:15 - 00:19
Use that information as research input for creating a new habit right now.
- 00:20 - 00:23
Maybe the last time you didn't like taking the steps,
- 00:24 - 00:26
maybe you were quite bored by them.
- 00:26 - 00:30
So it's very important for this time to make each step enjoyable enough for you
- 00:31 - 00:33
and how to do that. We'll get to that later.
- 00:34 - 00:38
The second reason most people say it didn't work the last time
- 00:38 - 00:41
is when they had too much on their plate,
- 00:41 - 00:43
Too much to do and so they simply didn't
- 00:43 - 00:46
have the mental bandwidth to create a new habit.
- 00:46 - 00:48
Well think about that right now.
- 00:49 - 00:51
What do you have on your plate right now?
- 00:51 - 00:54
Maybe there is an important deadline approaching and
- 00:54 - 00:56
you should wait for a couple of weeks until
- 00:56 - 00:58
that deadline is over and then you have
- 00:58 - 01:01
the mental bandwidth to create your new habit.
- 01:04 - 01:09
The third reason I hear a lot is, well, last time I actually didn't have enough .
- 01:09 - 01:13
Well, creating a new habit doesn't have to take that much of your time.
- 01:13 - 01:17
We'll get to that later. But of course you do have to be
- 01:17 - 01:23
willing to invest your time to make the investment right now.
- 01:23 - 01:26
It will take a little more of your time, but later on
- 01:26 - 01:28
the habit will be effortless.
- 01:32 - 01:37
The fourth reason my clients tell me a lot why it didn't work the last time is they say,
- 01:37 - 01:39
well I got distracted.
- 01:39 - 01:42
They wanted to get up early in the morning,
- 01:42 - 01:45
but they took their phone and then it was 30 minutes
- 01:45 - 01:48
later and then they had to get ready for work.
- 01:48 - 01:50
They wanted to go for a run,
- 01:50 - 01:56
but they got distracted by just another episode of their favorite netflix series.
- 01:57 - 02:00
So think about what would distract you in creating
- 02:00 - 02:03
the habit that you want to establish right now.
- 02:03 - 02:08
And how can you eliminate those distractions? And yes, I mean eliminate.
- 02:13 - 02:18
The next thing to consider is what are the existing habits you already have
- 02:18 - 02:21
and how can you stick your new habit to your existing habit?
- 02:22 - 02:27
And you have more of those than you think. Think about the rituals you already have.
- 02:27 - 02:30
Maybe you walk your dog three times a day,
- 02:30 - 02:34
think about your morning ritual like your morning coffee for example,
- 02:34 - 02:37
how can you stick your new habit to your existing habit?
- 02:38 - 02:41
So maybe your new rule would be that every morning
- 02:41 - 02:44
when I have my coffee I'll put the coffee down,
- 02:44 - 02:48
put it on the counter and then do my yoga practice.
- 02:48 - 02:53
Or maybe for walking your dog, you come back from the walk with your dog,
- 02:53 - 02:55
you put the dog leash where it belongs,
- 02:55 - 03:00
put your phone there as well and then go work on a task for 30 minutes of
- 03:00 - 03:04
uninterrupted time and then you won't have your phone around.
- 03:04 - 03:07
So that could also be something for sticking a new habit
- 03:07 - 03:09
to your existing habit.
- 03:14 - 03:19
And the most important rule is to make the first step very small.
- 03:19 - 03:21
Can you see yourself doing it?
- 03:21 - 03:24
Is it something that you know you can do and
- 03:24 - 03:27
something that you can do for every day to come.
- 03:27 - 03:32
So don't start with 50 pushups a day, start with five push ups a day,
- 03:32 - 03:37
don't start with journaling for 30 minutes, start with journaling for one page.
- 03:37 - 03:39
Make that first step very small
- 03:40 - 03:43
and expand that step and only when you've
- 03:43 - 03:47
established the first step into something more.
- 03:47 - 03:49
So when you've established the habit of
- 03:49 - 03:56
journaling for one page a day, expand to two pages a day,
- 03:56 - 04:00
but only when it really worked in doing that one page a day.
- 04:00 - 04:05
So keep the steps small and keep growing alongside the small steps
- 04:09 - 04:14
and of course the enjoyable part, how can you make it rewarding for yourself?
- 04:14 - 04:20
When I started my habit of going for a run every day, I really didn't like running.
- 04:20 - 04:24
So I was thinking about how could I make this enjoyable?
- 04:24 - 04:27
At the time I was listening to the podcast Serial,
- 04:27 - 04:30
the first season, and it was really addictive.
- 04:30 - 04:34
So I kept the next episode only for going on my next run.
- 04:34 - 04:39
So that way it was very rewarding for me because I wouldn't only go for a run,
- 04:39 - 04:42
but I could also listen to the next episode of Serial.
- 04:42 - 04:45
So think about what would be rewarding for you,
- 04:45 - 04:49
maybe listening to your favorite song or having a snack,
- 04:49 - 04:55
or it could also be rewarding to put a dollar in a jar every time you've done this step.
- 04:55 - 04:57
I've actually had some clients who just bought some
- 04:57 - 04:59
pretty marbles and put those in a glass jar,
- 04:59 - 05:04
just have it as a visual cue for every time they did the step they wanted to take.
- 05:06 - 05:09
These are just some quick tips in establishing a new habit.
- 05:10 - 05:13
I wish you the best of luck and I'm very curious how it went for you.
