Transcript: Black and White By: Collin Edwards MYP English 2 The 1950's and 60's was a time of struggle for racial equality. There were many tragedies from revolutions from African-Americans. This period is known as the "Civil Rights Movement". The book, Black and White by Larry Dane Brimmer, helps to tell the story of Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth and Bull Connor role in the movement. This book is about the confrontation between Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth and Eugene "Bull" Connor. Reverend Shuttlesworth was a pastor and a civil rights leader. He helped pave the way for reformation in the South. Bull Connor was the Commissioner of Public Safety for the city of Birmingham, Alabama during the Civil Rights movement. He sought to keep things the way they were, but Reverend Shuttlesworth believed differently. Bull did everything to get rid of him and his ways. Aha! Moment Fred Shuttlesworth had assassination attempts all throughout his life. There was an attempt on Christmas Day, 1956, at 9:40 p.m. He and others that were with him survived, this was one of the many attempts to kill him.The biggest thing that I learned from this book was that there was no concerns over background education in jobs. Bull Connor became the Commissioner of Public Safety for the city of Birmingham, Alabama without a high school diploma. Accuracy and Authenticity This story's facts are accurate and since the book is up to date because many otherr sources have the same information. The author does include significant facts in the side captions such as, Autherine Lucy: Tests the Brown v. Board of Education Decision. The author presents a balanced view of Facts in the captions help to support the generalization of African Americans struggle for freedom. Content and Perspective The purpose of this story is to inform the audience about critical events in the civil rights movement. The intended audience is for all people especially young people to inform them of key events in history. Style The message, text, and art are clear for the audience in this story. The level of difficulty in the story is average, but the author puts the reader in the book as one of the characters. I thought the book provided me with more information on the civil rights movement. This book helped me to learn how Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth and Bull Connor contributed in the struggle for freedom. The structure of the book was one part tells the story of one of the main characters (Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth) and another character (Bull Connor) and their confrontation. The book does clarify the message throughout the text following additional information from the extension of text. There were very good pictures to explain the stories and the overall situation. The captions in the book helps the reader to clearly know what the reader is trying to describe. About This Book Two high school basketball stars, one black and one white, see their lives move in different directions after they are arrested for shooting a man during a robbery. A gripping story about choices, friendship, and the implication of race in the justice system. Both Marcus and Eddie have experienced death in front of them, robbing, on the brink of their dreams and goals slipping away, and shooting someone. Eddies parents are very nice and supportive, his dad is hard for approval. Marcus has lost his trust in his mother and has a hard time trying to get it back. Both characters pay attention to their academics and basketball, they try to stay out of trouble but they have made some regretful choices. Marcus and Eddie have developed the thought of that staying out of trouble is the way to go and their current life situation motivates them to put in as much effort in basketball as they can and to pursue their dream as becaming pro. What cultural and personal meaning has the character added to his/her life experiences? How the character connects him/her-self to the situation based on their life. What does the character do because of his or her beliefs? Marcus and Eddie both have put their experiences to learn from their mistakes and have became wiser after it. Marcus and Eddie have decided to stay out of trouble and just focus on school and their passion, basketball, and becoming pro at it. Characters What beliefs has the character developed? Character motivation, thoughts, or reasons for doing what he/she did. Eddie- Marcus' bestfriend, Eddie is also a basketball star, eddie has more money than Marcus' family and he has both of his parents living with him. Eddie is also a smart kid.

Transcript: Have you ever wanted something very badly but cannot have it without conflict or problems? This is exactly how Thomas and Denyse feel. They just want to be treated equally. Summary Connections Main Characters Thomas- very athletic (on rep basketball team), blonde hair, blue eyes, white skin Denyse- athletic, dark hair, dark eyes, quiet, black skin. Steve- blonde hair, blue eyes, girl crazy, Thomas' best friend protagonist-Thomas antagonist-O'Ryan, Steve Passage Opinion Conflicts - Lamar doesn't like Thomas - Constant bullying/racism. - Steve asks Thomas to watch the girls basketball team after school. - Girl on court starts to smile at Thomas - Thomas' mom drives them home - They see the girl on the basketball team walking. - Thomas mom asks her if she wants a ride. - the girl climbs in the car a starts talking to Thomas. -her name is Denyse - Steve and Thomas start talking about a movie they are going to see. - don't know the time of the movie. - Denyse is going to see the same movie - Thomas' mom offers to drive. - at movie Thomas and Denyse start liking each other. -Thomas asks out Denyse -at basketball game other girls make fun of Thomas/Denyse - racism -go to Thomas' ski resort. -Lots of mean people being racist. -decide to keep on dating even though people are racist. Black and White Text-To-World:The book is very realistic to the real world. In the world. There are a lot of mean people and they decide to be hurtful and call others racist and mean names. Text-To-Self: I can relate to this book because one of my favorite movies is "The Blind Side." In this movie Michael Oher gets bullied in a football game by another player. Text-To-Text: The book "Through My Eyes" By: Tim Tebow is all about him growing up. It says that he was bullied by some of his teammates on his football team. Text-To-Self: I can relate to Thomas because in this book it really describes him clearly as an athlete. I'm like that because I like sports too. Kim, Bridget, Lamar, O'Ryan -good -I would rate this book 6/10 -recommended to ages 10-15 - Secondary Characters "People think it's all about black and white but there's nothing black and white about it. It's all grey, shades of grey." I thought this book was pretty good. i did not like how the author got Thomas and Denyse to kiss all the time becuse that made the book romantic. opinion La Fin -Lamar Eric Walters I think that this passage means black and white are two different skin colors but you shouldn't judge somebody on what color there skin is. You should look at what there character is and look behind appearance. You should be a friend to everybody no matter what there race, religion, gender, or skin color is.

Transcript: Black And White 1)The homelands middle school girls team playing a basketball game 2)Thomas notices that Denyse's playing skills are really simular to his. 3)After the game, Thomas and Denyse coincidently go to the movies together. They find out that their really simular to each other. 4)When Thomas goes to return Denyse's purse, he gets in an accident while roller blading. When Denyse is fixing is bruises, her brother Jamar steps in and wonder's hat going on between them. 5)After the movies, kids made all sorts of rumors about Denyse and Thomas but they both dont seem to care and start hanging out 6)One saturday, Thomas invited Denyse to go to the skiing resort with him. There while Thomas was teaching Denyse, they accidently fell on top of each other and kissed. 7)After Denyse told Thomas to leave her, someone made a really mean racist comment about Denyse. This got Thomas pretty mad but Denyse told him to calm down if he wanted to be her boyfriend. Which officially made their friends relationship turn into a dating relationship. 8)After Denyse invited Thomas to the church, they were having lunch when Denyse announced that Thomas is her boyfriend which ofcoarse shocked everyone in her family 9)When Denyse was playing a basketball game, the other team started giving her a hard time. She got knocked off and scratched a couple of times . She got really upset. 10)Denyse told thomas and Jamar that they called her an oreo, which means being black from the outside and white from the inside because they saw Denyse kissing Thomas before the game. 11)Jamar gives Thomas and Danyse some advice based on his dating experiences with white girls. 12)Thomas and Denyse decide that they will not break up because of what happened to them. After reading this book, it gives us a lesson that we shouldn't do things other peolpe want us to do infact do the things we want to do.
