Puerto Rico

Transcript: Government Puerto Rico is a self-governing common wealth in association with the United States as a territoy. The President of the U.S. is the chief of state and a governor is elected by the people. This leaves Puerto Rico with the authority of its internal affairs. The U.S still has control in areas like interstate trade, foreign relations, citizenship, currency, laws, military service, military base, declaration of war, etc. Education 94% of Puerto Rico's population is literate. School is free for the children between 6 and 16 like in most places. Even with the opportunity of 8 years of education there is a high drop out rate. Puerto Ricans 25 or older will mostly likely only have a high school diploma, a bachelor's will be about 1/7 of the population. Many funds fro the government are invest into education and even the U.S. federal funds encourage students to attend schools and universities.. Actors: The African culture has influenced Puerto Rico through art, music, food, language, and heritage. The African influence started when Ponce de Leon arrived in Puerto Rico with the Spaniards bringing along Juan Garrido who is said to be the first black to set foot on Puerto Rico. Slaves were later brougth to the island to work the sugar cane fields, introducing more of the race to the island. The Spanish of course brought the language to the culture but the Western Africans that were brought to Puerto Rico gave it its little swing. Many Puerto Ricans when speaking Spanish tend to swallow the "s" and often pronounce the "r" as an "l". This is because the African's have no "r" or "s"sound in their native tongue. The imprint continues in the cultural music of Puerto Rico known as Bomba and Plena. Both types of music are performed with percussion instruments such as pleneros and tambores. Other genres of music that are well known in Puerto Rico are Salsa, Merengue (adopted from the Dominican culture), and more recently Bachata and Reggaeton. Climate Puerto Rico has a Tropical marine climate meaning mild with little seasonal temperature variation. Along with this there is a lot of rain fall that can span through a week or more. The rain isnt like here in El Paso it can rain for good 15-20 minutes (even more) through out a day. Continent: North America Geography 4A By: Adelis Cruz Puerto Rican Food The African imprint has presented itself in the Puerto Rican cuisine through these foods: Gandules, Cocos, Bacalao, Yames, Funche, Plátanos, and Pasteles Demographics of Puerto Rico Population: 3,998,905 Growth Rate: 0.236 % Death Rate: 8.09 deaths/1000 people Life Expectancy: 79 years Literacy Rate: 94 % Percent Below Poverty: 45 % Per Capital GDP: $16,300 A little about their history..... The Puerto Rican culture was first influenced by the Taino, a race of indians, The greater influence to their culture was the Spanish. The Spanish came to the land enslaving the Tainos eventually decimating the existing population. The few that were left spent their years in the mountains to later intermarry with poor Spanish farmers. This marriage created the jíbaros. Along with the Taino and Spanish influences Puerto Rico has a rich African culture, brought along by the Spanish.
