Malawi – Climate/Agriculture Trading partners: South Africa, Zambia, China, US Challenges: · shortage of qualified primary school teachers; · inadequate physical infrastructure; · poor retention of girls mainly from standard five to eight; · high disease burden due to HIV and AIDS consequently leading to absenteeism especially among girls who take care of the sick; and · poor participation of school committees and their communities in school management. · Poverty levels are high in rural areas. 1 Doctor per 50,000 people Hinders the ability to deliver medical services to people in need Reason: Emigration Lack of access to education Aggravated by AIDS > 4 nurses are lost each month This also affects other sectors: Government Business Farmers Human Resources HIV/AIDS - Contemporary GDP: US $14.58 billion (2012 est.) (World ranking: 142) Labor force: agriculture: 90%; industry and services: 10% (2003 est.) Countries main income Agriculture Main crops: maize, tobacco, tea, sugar cane, groundnuts, cotton, wheat, coffee, and rice Industry: tobacco, tea, sugar, sawmill products, cement, consumer goods Challenges: limited capacity in terms of human and material resources to facilitate adult literacy and continuing education; early marriages perpetuated by socioeconomic factors; socio–cultural factors that make people believe that men should be leaders while women are followers; and, poor learning environment which affects girls in primary and secondary schools e.g. sanitary facilities, long distances to education facilities, extra burden from domestic chores especially for adolescent girls resulting into high dropout rate. 1964: Independent from Britain Indicator 1: Maternal Mortality Ratio Malawi Demographics Problems - Outline Indicator 4: Share of Women in Wage Employment in the Non- Agriculture Sector measure of employment opportunities ( i.e equal proportions of men and women in formal employment) Yet, more women participate in the agriculture sector than in the formal wage employment especially in jobs that require professional qualifications. Due to: literacy levels, gender disparity and cultural values. Facts About the Product: Drought tolerant maize variant Able to mature under limited rainfall Suitable for marginal rainfall areas 136 days to mature Normally: 150 – 180 days Able to mature under limited rainfall Suitable for marginal rainfall areas

Transcript: Regional Metamorphic Occurs when temp and pressure inside the Earth’s crust change. Index minerals are used to estimate the temp, depth, and pressure of rock undergoes, like mica, kyanite, and more. Regional Metamorphism forms when pressure builds up in rock that is buried deep below other rock formations. Occurs deep within Earth’s crust. Origins: Stratification is the process when sedimentary rock are arranged into layers Strata differ on each other depending on the size, color, and the kind Sedimentary rocks can record the motion of wind and water waves on lakes, oceans, rivers, and sand dunes called rippled marks Mud cracks form when fine-grained sediments at the bottom of a shallow body of water are exposed to the air and dry out Sediment comes from the process of erosion and sre little rock and mineral fragments Sedimentary rocks form near or at the Earth’s surface Sedimentary rocks form without heat and pressure Strata is a single horizontal layer of rock that is very noticeable Rock Presentation Contact Metamorphic Orgins of rock Metamorphic Rocks Textures of Rock: If the temp. or pressure is different from the one when the rock was formed, the rock will undergo metamorphic. Temp ranges from 50C-1000C The depth and pressure allows the rock to heat to the temp and maintain as a solid. Structures: Compostion and Texture Begin as Magma Magma can form; 1. When rock is heated 2. When pressure is released 3. When rocks change composition When magma cools, it forms an Igneous Rock Orgins: The amount of time it takes for magam cool determines the texture of an igneous rock Light colored rocks that include elements like aluminum, potassium, silicon, and sodium are called felsic rocks Dark colored rocks that include calcium, iron, magnesium, and poor in silicon are called mafic rocks The more time it takes for magma to cool, it makes more time for mineral crystals to grow. The larger the crystals, the texture becomes more coarser Fine-grained rocks contain very few crystals or none at all Composition: Sedimentary Rocks Formations Located above and below the surface of the earth Some magma cools deep within the Earth’s crust Intrusive igneous rock forms when magma is put in other rocks below the Earth’s surface and cools Intrusive igneous rock have a coarsed-grained texture and have large visible crystals Extrusive igneous rock form from magma that erupts onto the earth’s surface Igneous Rock Contact Metamorphism occurs near igneous intrusions. The effect of heat on rock gradually decreases as the rock distances from the magma and the temp decreases. Occurs near magma. Sedimentary rocks are classified by the way it’s formed Clastic sedimentary rocks form when a fragment called clasts are cemented together Chemical sedimentary rocks form when minerals crystallize out of a solution, like sea water Organic sedimentary rock form from remains of once iving plants and or animals Foliated Metamorphic Rock Rock in which the mineral grains are arranged in planes or band are foliated. Foliate usually contains flat minerals, like biotite mica, or chlorite. Shale is sedimentary rock made of layers of clay minerals. Shale can become a foliated metamorphic rock called slate. If slate is exposed to more heat and pressure than usual, it turns into phyllite. When phyllite is exposed to heat, it creates schist. More heat and pressure caused to these bands are called gneiss.
